On Sunday guest preacher Ricky Alcantar, from our sister church in El Paso, preached from Isaiah 2:1-5. He encouraged us to let our dreams be God-sized: peace with all men, joyful unity, and lasting justice. We long for the day Jesus will make these dreams a reality. Until then, we do all we can to live in the good of the gospel today.
On Sunday Pastor Eric preached from Genesis 6:1-8. He pointed out that there are many details in this book that threaten to derail our focus (e.g. the Nephilim and sons of God from our text). But we need to keep our eyes on the main storyline. Genesis tells of a God with an unwavering commitment to bring Himself glory by blessing His people, even when they get way off track. That’s our story too.
On Sunday Pastor Eric preached from Genesis 5:1-32. It’s the first of 9 genealogies in Genesis. It’s a chapter most of us would skip over. But that’s only because we don’t understand its significance. This genealogy helps us locate ourselves in God’s story. We see His promised plan unfold in the past. We look for His promised plan unfolding in the present. And we long for His promised plan to unfold in the future.
On Sunday, guest preacher Mark Alderton, from our sister church in Aurora, CO, preached from Psalm 13. He showed us three steps to take when suffering strikes: ask God your questions, bring God your requests, and trust God with your salvation.
On Sunday Pastor Eric continued our series in the first book of the Bible as he preached from Genesis 4:17-26. He showed us that there are two cities pictured here: the city of man and the city of God. One city characterized by greed, envy, and murder. One city where God is faithfully fulfilling His promises to redeem mankind. By faith in the Redeemer we join the city of God and long for the day when that city will fill the earth.
On Easter Sunday, Pastor Eric preached the familiar story of Cain and Abel from Genesis 4:1-16. This story is not about not being like Cain. It’s not about being like Abel. It’s about trusting in the true and better Abel, who’s blood speaks a better word — a word of justice, of pardon, and of grace. Abel was martyred, but he will rise again. And if we trust in Jesus, so will we.
On Sunday, our intern Dylan Sohie preached from Psalm 84. He reminded us that to be with God is to have everything we need. All who trust in the Lord find themselves safe, strong, and satisfied. There’s no need to be shaken by what we lack, for we have everything in Christ.
On Sunday guest preacher Nate McLaurin shared from Psalm 40. He reminded us that waiting on God is not passive, it’s earnest and intense. We wrestle against the temptation to doubt God’s timely provision and His sure promises. But if we wait, we will experience a great joy in our deliverance that is drawn from the deep well of despair.
