Why Do We Celebrate Reformation Sunday?
Our annual celebration of the Protestant Reformation is this Sunday. We can’t wait to enjoy it with you.
“Why do we do it?” is a question we get asked regularly. For some, the answer may seem obvious. But for others, it may not.
Here are a handful of reasons why we celebrate the Reformation as a local church:
The Reformers were interested in recovering the biblical gospel. They weren’t seeking to invent something new, but to get the church back to the core tenets of our faith. We believe this was absolutely necessary.
When we celebrate Reformation Sunday, we are not celebrating the fracture between Roman Catholics and Protestants. We are focused on the necessary recovery of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone according to Scripture alone.
Celebrating the Reformation reminds us that we stand in a long line of faithful brothers and sisters God has used to get the gospel to us. Hard decisions have been made. Persecution has been endured. God has used it all for our good.
We are not the only ones who believe the Reformation was good and necessary. Many other churches around the globe do as well. When we celebrate, we are joining in with them.
What we celebrate tells our neighbors what is most important to us. Reformation Sunday is a reminder of what is centrally important and tells our guests and neighbors what we cherish most: the gospel of Jesus Christ.
